A silverplate tapered pedestal vase by Colonial Silver Co., stamped 161 on the base. The form is clean and confident, a wide flared rim narrowing to a small footed base, the silverplate developed a deep uneven patina across the surface moving between warm grey, dark brown, and near-black in the lower body. The kind of patina that makes polishing feel like exactly the wrong instinct.

A few stems of dried grasses or eucalyptus look exactly right in it. So does a single garden cutting or a loose handful of branches. On a dining table, a console, or a bathroom shelf it holds its own with very little effort.

Works just as well empty on a mantle or windowsill, where the patina does all the talking.
