Antique Hand-Colored Engraving Artwork - Sitting
An antique hand-colored engraving titled "Paysan des environs de Berne," both drawn and engraved by J.L. Aberli, as noted in the inscription below the image. Where the companion piece shows a standing figure in a landscape, this one is quieter and more interior — a bearded man seated on a stone bench, tricorn hat, dark coat, hand extended with a coin or token, a bundle resting at his feet. The scene has a relaxed, slightly wry quality that makes it easy to look at for a long time.
The hand-coloring is cool and precise, the blue of the breeches and the plaid of the bundle sitting against the muted stone interior behind him. The engraving is presented in a slim gilt frame with a warm cream mat, a match to the companion print.
The paper has aged to a warm honey tone consistent with its age, with light toning to the mat. The print is clean and the hand-coloring is stable.
A beautiful object on its own. Exceptional alongside the standing figure from the same series.
